Centauri Lite
A proof of concept experiment. Centauri Lite is a project dedicated utilizing portable wireless technology to create a new gaming experience. Centauri Lite presents a game model where players can play using portable devices on their own schedules while keeping them part of the extended game world. The basic concept is we view the player's world and the server world as two separate entities and allow them to interact only through discrete channels instead of keeping the entire server and player world in synch. For example, a player can launch an attack on another player by "sending" an army to an enemy territory. Armies are one of the discrete items that can be passed to the game server. The player does not retain control of the army once it has been passed to the server-when the army is transferred back into the other client's game world, it is given to an AI player.
We also divide game-play into discrete time periods. Every "day" in real time is equivalent to a certain number of turns in the game world. Player can sync with the server any time during this time period to update their status with the world. Mechanisms to ensure timely player synching are discussed later, but in essence the system allows for players to update with the game world whenever their schedule permits.
